EARLY MORNING, MONDAY 5 OCTOBER

Seb: I’m sorry about my behaviour yesterday. Can we meet? I’m at Fenn House helping organise the equipment returns. Are you here? xx

Bea: Not at the moment, but I will be soon.

Seb: Can we have coffee? The catering tent is still open. xx

Bea: Yes. See you there in thirty minutes.

“Now, Daisy.” Lady Beatrice crouched down outside the entrance to the catering tent and addressed her little westie. “I need you to be nice to Seb, please.”

Daisy, sitting on the ground, her tail wagging, tilted her head to one side.

“No growling or barking, all right?” She patted the little dog on the head as she gave her a treat. Then standing, Lady Beatrice took a deep breath and pulled the door open. Scanning the inside of the marquee, she spied Seb sitting in the far corner at a table for four, nursing a cup of coffee while staring at his phone. Come on, Bea, you can do this.

Seb turned and smiled as he saw her, then waved. She smiled back, and tugging on Daisy’s lead, she weaved her way to him.

“Bella!” Seb stood up as she approached and held out his hands. As she was about to reach out, a low grumble came from Daisy.

Really, Daisy? Just this once, can’t you pretend to like him?

Lady Beatrice moved around the table to avoid the little dog getting too close, and Seb sighed, letting his arms drop by his sides.

Lady Beatrice took the seat opposite him and, taking her jacket off, gave him an apologetic smile as she sat down. “Sorry, but Daisy—”

“Why did you bring her?” Seb muttered across the table to her. “You know how I feel about having dogs around where food is served.”

Her hackles rising, she inhaled deeply through her nose and silently let her breath out. If he carries on like this, he’ll make it easier for me to end things.

Seb pushed a takeaway cup towards her and smiled. “I got you a black coffee.”

“Thank you.” She took hold of the cup and lifted it to her mouth as they sat in silence.

This is awkward. She felt like they were strangers meeting on a blind date. “Um, so how are you doing?”

Seb huffed. “The police still insist that we all stay here while they complete their investigation. I wish they would speed it up. My chefs have jobs to get back to, and I’m due to attend an industry awards dinner on Thursday evening. It’s just so… inconsiderate of them. And they don’t seem to be very clear about what they want from us. Last night, they asked me if I sampled the mushrooms during Luca’s demonstration. How am I supposed to remember if I did or not? It was a week ago! Have they any idea how many dishes I’ve cooked since then?” He sighed heavily and grabbed his cup.

“Well, it’s a murder investigation now. I imagine they need everyone close by in case they want to talk to anyone.”

Seb gasped as his fingers let go of the cup in his hand, and it dropped onto the table.
